Irish Chamber Orchestra: Beethoven 7
Thursday, October 20, 2011 - 19:45 to 22:00
ICO enthusiasts have the opportunity to preview the orchestra’s US touring programme when the Irish Chamber Orchestra performs live from Limerick University Concert Hall on Thursday, 20 October.
Two of the country’s brightest young stars perform in this one-off performance. Belfast-born pianist Michael McHale performs Prokofiev’s demanding left-hand Piano Concerto, commissioned by the concert pianist Paul Wittgenstein who lost his right arm in World War I. Pádraic Keane (Uileann Pipes) was recipient of the 2011 TG4 Young Musician of the Year award. He performs a new work, TERMŌN, by celebrated composer and pianist Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin. Composed for String Orchestra and Uileann Pipes, TERMŌN commemorates the 10th Anniversary of 9/11. Two symphonies complete the programme. Haydn’s Miracle Symphony No. 96 reveals the original and inventive composing that distinguishes Haydn’s mature symphonies. The momentum of Beethoven’s 7th Symphony Op. 92 is breath-taking and provided the soundtrack for the climactic scene in this year’s popular Oscar-winning movie, The King’s Speech.
The live-stream on www.platformireland.ie has been made possible through the Arts Council of Ireland Touring and Dissemination of Work Scheme 2011/12.
In addition to being readily available on pc and smartphone, Platform Ireland is partnering with venues countrywide to provide a live web feed, to present the concert on large screen to audiences across Ireland.
