Of Haydn’s Paris Symphonies, No. 83 is a seminal work, marking a new level of compositional attainment. Coupled with this is his Armida Overture which Haydn regarded as his best work.
Irish composer Garrett Sholdice’s music possesses an ‘exquisite delicacy’ (The Irish Times). Rising young Irish star Michael McHale performs the world premiere of Sholdice’s new piano concerto inspired by Haydn’s Paris symphonies and memories of the city of Paris itself. This new concerto is a celebration of the ICO’s incisive, joyful performance aesthetic and McHale’s extraordinary pianism, but also a very personal meditation on the beautiful, kaleidoscopic resonance of the piano itself.
Enjoy a rare opportunity to hear Verdi’s seldom performed String Quartet in E minor which is unmistakably Italian and his only piece of chamber music not featuring vocals but with a lyricism reminiscent of his operas.
