Irish Modern Dance Theatre: Fall and Recover

Ten survivors of torture from nine different countries sought asylum in Dublin. There they found a way back to their humanity. Fall and Recover is their collaborative performance with two leading Irish contemporary dancers, celebrating the power of the human spirit, dignity and determination.  

Fall and Recover emerges from John Scott’s workshops with clients of Centre for Care for Survivors of Torture (CCST) in Dublin, Ireland. It received a major revival, commissioned by Laurie Uprichard for Dublin Dance Festival 2009 which breathed new life into Fall and Recover. Mixing two professional dancers with a cast of torture survivors from 9 countries. Cast members, many now Irish citizens, have lost homes, careers, family and health but their dance celebrates the power of the human spirit, their dignity and determination and carries imprints from their lives, their loss and their future hopes.  The presentation of Fall and Recover in La MaMa ETC was made possible with the support of Imagine Ireland, a year-long season of Irish arts in America in 2011, an initiative of Culture Ireland. 

Irish Modern Dance Theatre (imdt), founded in 1991, policy is to create and commission new works, expanding the experience of Dance Theatre for audiences and performers in Ireland. John Scott, artistic director, pioneers new expression and promotes dialogue with international choreographers including Meredith Monk, John Jasperse, Thomas Lehmen, Sean Curran, Chris Yon, Deborah Hay, Sara Rudner and Charles Atlas. The work leaves audiences thrilled and sometimes shocked - playing with every theatrical and dance convention.
